Although I do not currently live in Amsterdam (maybe someday!) I was once employed in the city center and spent a lot of time inside the city limits. I feel comfortable amongst the winding canals and bewildered tourists, and am here today to share five of my top spots to visit when in Amsterdam. In order to remain cohesive, I am focusing on one of my most beloved neighborhoods, and that is the famously cozy Nine Streets area.
De Negen Straatjes in Dutch, The Nine Streets is a grid of stores and small restaurants just outside of the touristy main shopping district and will give you a bit of fresh air after fighting through the narrow spaces surrounding the high-street shops. The Nine Streets contains countless small clothing spaces, cute little cafes, and other specialty stores that are worth the extra walk outside of the city center, and is a must-see area if you want to grab that perfect canal snapshot. From coffee to clothing, food to perfumes, here are five of my absolute top spots in The Nine Streets!
This place is a bright, but small lunch and coffee spot with an excellent selection of java, sandwiches, and small baked goods. You can expect to find all of the Instagram favorites such as avocado toast, matcha lattes, and my personal favorite, a selection of homemade juices. This place is quite popular amongst the locals and can get a bit cramped, but it is just too damn cute with most of the seating situated on the second-floor loft. I highly recommend getting there at non-peak hours to get the most out of your visit, because it really is one of the best places to get breakfast or brunch in The Nine Streets.
If you watch my Instagram stories, you will know that this coffee shop is a frequent weekend stop for me for an afternoon latte. I have hunted out quite a few coffee shops in both Amsterdam, and in Utrecht (where I live), and I can still comfortably say that these guys make the best latte in The Netherlands. Stop by for a cozy nook to read in, or an afternoon pick-me-up after a day of wandering the canals.
If you are into your niche perfumes, this is a must-visit in Amsterdam. Period. This shop has introduced me to so many great fragrances and has allowed me to try samples from brands all over the world. I love testing perfumes that you can’t readily find in your average beauty store, and this is truly a one-stop gem where you can find something really special. They also have a smaller, but good collection of scented candles, other home fragrances, skincare, and makeup. If any of these items spike your curiosity I highly recommend checking it out!
Anecdote is one of my favorite Dutch brands; curating a collection of well-cut and quality staples with trends tastefully incorporated to everything from blazers to blouses. I have had my eye on a few of their sweaters this season, not to mention their gorgeous suit sets. I love that they have so many cute options that are affordable compared to similar items offered by other designer brands. If you are that person who loves quality classic items, I would highly recommend checking out this little shop.
This is the newest find from my Nine Street adventures, and I am thrilled to have stumbled upon this little shop. Trust me, there are plenty of small boutiques in the area with multi-brand collections to browse, but I am rather fond of this one in particular. It is fairly dark inside, and easy to miss amongst the many storefronts all stacked next to each other, but this one stocks items I know I would love and wear. During my last visit, I had to resist buying one of their many pairs of classic loafers, or a stunning long wool coat. Don’t miss this selection on your Amsterdam exploration!
